How Coding Made Two Brothers Billionaire
Directi comprises a group of tech businesses owned and has multiple business units that are managed by independent teams. Directi became the fastest growing domain and hosting company in Asia three years after it was started. Now, let’s have a glimpse of their childhood and early days. Born and raised in Mumbai, both brothers began pursuing their dreams at the age of 13.
Divyank Turakhia had a long-lasting love for coding from his childhood and built his first game with his brother to monitor the growth & prices of the stock market. After developing that game, their interest in coding starts increasing every day, which was causing distraction in studies.
So, their father started convincing Divyank to get himself enrolled for a B. Com degree. To keep his father's words, Divyank enrolled in the same but never attended college because his interest was in coding rather than B.com.The whole day they used to stay at home and learn to code. And when they got enough gripping on coding,
they decided to start their company in 1998. Somehow, they convinced their father to give the initial capital of Rs. 25,000. With this initial capital, Bhavin Turakhia at the age of 18 along with his brother Divyank Turakhia at 16 years of age, started their first company Directi- a web hosting company providing website domain names and internet services to the other companies. After that, they have built another famous company Bigrock under the same banner.
With this, they have launched ten more companies under the same banner Directi. Bhavin mentioned in one of his interviews that how his father used to struggle for 12 hours working for them. They were from a middle-class family but with big dreams. They had a hard time proving that they can do something on their own as they were quite young. The brothers always wanted to share whatever they earn and that’s why every company is co-founded by both of them.
Some of the business units under Directi are Flock, Ringo, Radix, Codechef, and some units that are sold to other companies like BigRock and LogicBoxes. In 2016, Directi sold media.net (An ad company) for $900 million to a Chinese company which is their greatest acquisition. Currently, Directi is having more than 1,000 employees and 10 million customers around the globe.
They have received numerous awards for their work, including the World Economic Forum's Young Global Leader award in 2011 and the Bharti Foundation's Bharti Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2005. They are believed to earn their first million before the age of 20 and became billionaires before 40.
Each brother has personal property worth Rs.10,000 Crores and known as one of the greatest personalities in the Indian Ad-tech world.
